Brasília, September 19, 2025 – The Union of BRICS Writers (BRICS Literature Network) has been officially established during the II BRICS Forum on “Traditional Values”, held from September 15–17, 2025, at the Chamber of Deputies Annex II in Brasília, Brazil.

The international association will bring together writers, literary critics, and publishing houses from BRICS member states to foster multilateral cultural exchange and cooperation. The initiative to create this literary network originated in June 2025, during a meeting with the Union of Chinese Writers.

Leadership of the new organization will be jointly held by Vadim Terekhin, Co-President of the Union of Writers of Russia, and Marcos Freitas, President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Representatives from all BRICS countries will form part of the association’s collective governing body.

The announcement of the union’s creation was made during a roundtable dedicated to the BRICS Literary Prize, with the support of the Eurasian Media Group. Terekhin presented a longlist of nominated authors from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Iran, Indonesia, and Egypt.

Indian parliamentarian and prize committee member Hemang Joshi emphasized the importance of this cooperation, stating:

“Art and literature know no borders. The BRICS Literary Prize offers a platform to unite literary communities and celebrate literature at the international level. This truly opens a new chapter in the literary world.”

Ethiopian parliamentarian and prize committee member Zelalem Melak Bogale added:

“This prize allows participating countries to get to know each other through their cultures and traditions, because literature is a powerful tool for telling the stories and traditions of nations.”

The BRICS Literary Prize, launched in November 2024 during the first “Traditional Values” forum, aims to strengthen humanitarian cooperation by recognizing authors whose works reflect the traditions and values of BRICS nations. It also encourages translation and the publication of new works. The prize will be awarded in three stages: longlist (September, Brazil), shortlist (October, Shanghai), and the final award ceremony in November in Moscow.

The creation of the Union of BRICS Writers marks a milestone in international literary cooperation, opening new pathways for dialogue, translation, and cultural exchange across continents.
